Ethics is defined as moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity. In this workshop, EPL Director Rick Carlson covered ethics in 3 main areas: 

  1. the workplace
  2. scientific publication & review
  3. proposal preparation & review

He discussed:

  • Harassment and how to report it
  • Scientific misconduct (ensure you keep a lab notebook that keeps track of and documents what you have done)
  • Plagiarism
  • Authorship (avoid shingling papers, i.e., writing eight separate papers on the same subject)
  • Proper attribution (ask a reviewer to be a co-author but do not copy their comments into your paper)
  • Conflicts of interest (real or apparent)
  • Ethics within the reviewing process
