Carnegie Grants Manager Koki Hurley presented a workshop on how to build a successful cost proposal. Many topics were discussed, including funding opportunities and understanding the different agency requirements, i.e., NSF, NASA, etc. Read and Love your funding opportunity announcement, was the message of the day.
Three guidelines to follow with regard to Uniform Guidance, which outlines cost principals are:
- Is it allowable?
- Is it reasonable?
- Is it allocable?
Hurley discussed the different elements of a proposal, as well as the elements of preparing your budget within that proposal.
Also discussed was the difference between direct costs (i.e., materials, publication costs, consulting services) vs indirect costs (i.e., administrative support, utilities, supplies, building costs). Carnegie's negotiated rate for indirect costs is 61.53%.
Also included in the presentation was a Proposal Workflow.
