Shaun Hardy retired in 2023 after serving 34 years as campus librarian and unofficial historian of EPL. He currently pursues research on the history of science and assists with special projects in the EPL Archives. He holds degrees in geological sciences and physics from the University of Rochester and library and information studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

100 Years Ago DTM Chased the Eclipse That Made Einstein Famous

Louis Bauer, DTM’s founding Director, was an eclipse veteran. In May 1900, four years before the Department was established, Bauer organized the first systematic observations aimed at detecting geomagnetic effects of a solar eclipse.

Campus Library

Located in the Abelson building, the Earth and Planets Laboratory Library supports advanced research in the physical, earth, and space sciences and contains the historic archives of more than a century of discovery and innovation on campus.

The library subscribes to more than 200 scientific journals and reference databases and holds 10,000 technical books, maps, and reports.
