NOVA's Treasures of the Earth: Gems

Friday, November 04, 2016
The kickoff program of NOVA's three part series Treasures of Earth was on gems and aired on Nov 2. The series "explores the riches of our planet, including those forged deep underneath the surface." In this first installment, the subject matter is gems—diamonds, rubies, emeralds—and the secrets they hold not only about their beauty, but the formation of the Earth itself.
For the gems segment, DTM's Steve Shirey, and Geophysical Lab members Bob Hazen, Joe Lai, Kadek Hemawan, were involved in the filming on the Broad Branch Road campus. The segment ended with Shirey discussing his work on dating sulfide inclusions in diamonds and the constraints that they may place on the onset of modern-style plate tectonics.
