Who said soccer was boring? This year’s annual MudCup held on 23 October 2015, was a thrilling game that featured a loaded, hungry Geophysical Laboratory team and a feisty, determined DTM team.

Both teams from the Geophysical Laboratory and DTM played a fierce game at this year's annual MudCup.

The game started off with a bang, as within a few minutes, GL was on the board with a goal by their captain, Sergey Lobanov. A little while later, GL padded its lead with a breakaway goal by GL staff scientist Andrew Steele. And just to make sure the game was out of reach, Sergey scored again a few minutes later, giving GL a commanding 3-0 lead.

GL scored first within the first few minutes.

DTM scientists aren’t just smart—they’re determined and don’t give up. Despite the unforgiving score, DTM charged ahead. Shortly before the end of the first half, DTM staff scientist Conel Alexander scored on a header from a corner kick. Then in the second half, DTM postdoc John Platt won a scramble for the ball near GL’s goalie and squeezed the ball into goal, making it 3-2. After more back and forth action, the game was winding down with only a few minutes left. DTM won a corner kick and once again managed to score on a header, this time by DTM MudCup recruit Tolu Olugboji, miraculously evening the score at 3-3.

But DTM would fight back in the second half to bring the score tied at three.

For the second year in a row, the game went into overtime. While both teams featured exhausted players, GL found a renewed energy and forced the ball deep into DTM’s half. GL postdoc Zack Gabelle, Steele, and Sergey connected on three very nice passes, leading to the winning goal by Sergey (his third of the game!).

Team DTM lost in overtime, with a final score of 4-3 GL. But there's always next year!

For the first time in seven years, GL won the MudCup and will proudly boast the title of Champions…until next year’s game decides who is best again!
