The past few weeks have been a reminder of the impermanence of life and the people we hold dear, as two former bastions of Carnegie Science and members of the former Geophysical Laboratory (GL) passed away. First, GL Director and Staff Scientist Charlie Prewitt, on April 28th, then former GL Staff Scientist Marilyn Fogel on May 11th.

In remembering these two, it also strikes me that they would be tremendously excited by the work our scientists are continuing to do at the Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL). As always, it is such a pleasure to highlight our work, and this month we do so in fond memory of Charlie and Marilyn.

In an essay expounding on the role of private science institutions in the modern research landscape, Carnegie President Eric Isaacs writes that “… independent research organizations bear a deep historical responsibility to keep on interrogating the fundamental mysteries of life and the universe.” This month’s newsletter is a shining example of how we continue with this tradition at Carnegie and EPL today while honoring the giants from our past

A letter from the new Director, Michael Walter

Michael Walter New Director Letter

In 2022, I will step into the role of Director at the Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL). This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of EPL together with my colleagues, but it is also bittersweet because we are saying farewell to our Director, colleague, and friend Richard Carlson.

Unlike the cicadas who go pretty much unnoticed during their time underground, EPL staff have been quite visible over the last year as they turn datasets acquired pre-pandemic into publications. As is typical of the work pursued by EPL scientists, the discoveries range from the deep Earth to distant stars.
